  • WellMed Poster  WellMed, a disease management company based out of Texas, utilizes the VAP in their IHD program. WellMed conducted a study with Thomas Jefferson University to see if treating unique VAP parameters, not found using routine cholesterol testing, could reduce cost of ER visits and reduce hospital beds days. The conclusions were significant for those patients who were managed with medications based on the VAP results. The findings indicated significant reduction in ER visits, reduced hospital bed days, increase drug compliance and cost savings were obtained showing substantial reductions in expense for these already established high risk patients.

  • ACC LDL Poster  The University of Utah used the VAP to determine the clinical significance of LDL subclasses despite normal LDL levels at or below 100mg/dL. Following adverse outcomes and death this study showed that despite LDL level <100mg/dL if the patient still had a substantial concentration of LDL4+LDL3 (dense LDL, pattern B) then there was significant residual risk that left the patient at higher risk for a negative outcome. This data suggest that once patients have been managed to the NCEP target of <100mg/dL that LDL subclass data may further classify risk and select patients may require more aggressive LDL lowering or other agents added to improve subclass information.

  • ACC ApoA1 Poster  The University of Utah used the VAP to determine the clinical significance of apolipoprotein AI (apoAI) despite normal HDL levels >40mg/dL. Following adverse outcomes and death this study showed that despite seemingly normal levels of HDL >40mg/dL, if the patient still had had low levels of apoAI these patients had negative outcomes. This study supports the growing data that not all HDL lipoproteins are equal and following subclasses of HDL may be a better marker of risk and subsequent target of therapy.

"Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disease in U.S. Detailed lipid information from the VAP test can be very helpful to busy clinicians in their efforts to identify, treat and track the dyslipidemias which cause cardiovascular disease."

- Eliot A. Brinton, M.D., Director of the Metabolism Section of Cardiovascular Genetics, Director of the LDL Apheresis Center, and Associate Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine
